Is ceramic/porcelain tile a good choice for Northern Ontario homes?
Yes. Tile is durable, easy to clean, and works great with radiant floor heating—a big plus for our long winters. Porcelain’s low water-absorption also handles slush, salt, and wet boots at entries and mudrooms.
What’s better for floors here—ceramic or porcelain?
For high-traffic or moisture-prone areas (entries, baths, laundry), choose porcelain: it’s denser and more water-resistant. Ceramic is excellent for most interior spaces and backsplashes, and is typically more budget-friendly.
Can tile be used outdoors around North Bay/Callander?
Yes—if you pick the right product. Use frost-rated porcelain that’s approved for exterior use, install with freeze-thaw-appropriate mortars/grouts, and ensure proper slope/drainage. We’ll help you select materials that are rated for our climate.
Is tile safe for radiant floor heating?
Absolutely. Ceramic and porcelain pair perfectly with hydronic or electric radiant heat. We use compatible mortars and membranes and program a gradual heat ramp-up after installation to protect the system and finish.
How do I deal with winter salt, sand, and slush on tile?
Place mats at entrances, sweep or vacuum grit often, and mop with a neutral-pH tile cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals or vinegar on cement-based grout. Wipe puddles promptly to protect grout and reduce slip risk.
Do I need to seal grout?
Cementitious grout: sealing is recommended (typically every 1–3 years depending on traffic).
High-performance/epoxy grout: generally doesn’t require sealing and offers superior stain resistance—great for kitchens, rentals, and cottages.
Our Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA Rapid-Setting All-in-One Grout
Is not recommended for sealing.
What does tile installation cost locally?
Most residential floors land around $10–$20 per sq. ft. installed, depending on tile size/pattern, subfloor prep, and grout type. Backsplashes and custom showers are priced by complexity.
How long will my tile project take?
Bathroom/Kitchen floor (100–200 sq. ft.): ~1–3 days including setting and grouting.
Backsplash: often 1 day.
Custom shower: 3–5+ days for waterproofing, setting, and curing.
Dry times, patterns, and prep can add time—we’ll outline a clear schedule.
Can you install tile in basements or on concrete slabs?
Yes. We check for moisture, cracks, and levelness. Where needed, we use crack-isolation/uncoupling membranes and self-leveling underlayment to create a stable surface—important for older homes and lakeside cottages.
Are tile floors slippery?
Choose finishes with texture or matte/sheened surfaces for wet areas. Look for products with suitable slip-resistance ratings and use bath/entry mats. Porcelain with light texture is ideal for bathrooms, entries, and mudrooms.
